BTW is the sound card actually needed? i mean, none of you are saying anything about it and crytic didn't add it to his list, and I'm instead considering fans instead to cool it down this beast... ideas?

the top GFX card is the Nvidia GTX 280
you wont need lightscribe with that player so just scratch that out and you'll cut off $15 not much but you get 15 bucks more for w/e
and screw XP use vista.
and wait a month or so til the new intel chips came in then the ones your gonna want will be cheaper.
and go to www.forums.slizone.com
its obviously a forum where you can talk about computers and such. but you shouldnt talk about ATI cards there, the guys kinda get offended.
uhm get a 9800 GT or some thin those should be a bit cheaper too since the real awesome cards have come out.
you wont need the sound card cause the mobo's (motherboards) have a built in sound thing
the NZXT Tempest is almost the same thing as the 900.
for the HD i would say go RAID but your budget dosnt allow.
when i have time i might do a build for you.

maybe i'll find a used monitor at a garage sale or something
XP:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116511
Vista:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116480
the poll is up! cast your votes because i personally am in the middle on this on this, because vista has problems, but then when they do fix those problems there's a %50 percent chance of getting a free update sorta like apple does does

I have Ubuntu, and I hardly use it. Great OS, but it doesn't have what I need. Sure, I can get Photoshop to run on it, but 3ds Max is still a pain in the butt to get running, and it still doesn't run well, least it hasn't for me. Ubuntu can also be tricky to configure because of the lack of drivers, etc.

Yes, vista works fine. The reason people think it's bad is because idiots try running it with > 1 gig or RAM. This is 2008 people, there is no way in hell you can seriously run vista with 512 megs of RAMCryticfarm wrote:Vista's fine, it's run all my programs so far :\.
EDIT:
I suggest you post your build in the forums of ncix. There's some people that really know what there doing there :p.

** Mid-tower and full-tower are different motherboard sizes. ATX will fit in a mid-tower which is 12"x9.6" I believe. Full tower allows for a larger form factor motherboard.
For a video card though, I would recommend an nVidia 8800GT, a little more expensive, but it runs better, and isn't dual-slot so it's half the size, allowing for more expansion area. I'd recommend getting an Intel CPU too, Core 2 Duo E7200 should suffice. 2.54Ghz, 45nm, $120. Same with the motherboard, I'd get a more new one. the nForce 5xx's are a little old. I'd recommend a LGA 775 750i. The current RAM you have picked out will work for it, but I don't think you need 4GB unless you're doing some intense gaming and digital work. 2-3GB should be plenty. This is really nice RAM, Corsair. My top choice for RAM, comes with a heatsink too, so an added bonus. Hard drive and Powersupply seem fine to me, 320GB is a decent amount of storage, depending on how much media you have stored on it.

everything you suggested is great, but that motherboard is way too expencive for me, i've managed to plan for $1000 (so i can afford about a <$850 computer without a monitor)
