Double-post, I know, but this rant I typed up (fingers hurt now) explains a lot of the views I was trying to express in this:
Not against the troops in general, but instead against what the military is trying to do in a lot of third-world countries. Sometimes, it's just best to leave them to develop their own economy, supplying them in subtle ways. If they run into big trouble (someone else commits serious war crimes, such as mass civilian slaughter, etc), we can intervene. However, when we tell them that they need to adapt to democracy, and even giving them the option to deny it, they're often too desperate not to take it. The main problem is that they have different customs that likely won't work with that type of government, and many of them have people that are so used to fighting for leadership that it will just make the problem worse.
Often, it's just best to take a step back and advise them on what we think they should do, but not do anything ourselves for them until it's completely necessary (often not the case).
Please, don't think that I'm going to go out there and say that the military is evil, and every one that is a part of it should die. I'm not like that at all. In fact, my dad is a technician in the Navy, and I have a high respect of him for that. I hold a very special kind of respect for someone that is willing to lay down their life for someone else, whether I agree with what they're fighting for, or not.
