you realise it would be more work to make something disappear and then reappear than it would be to just leave it in right?

just take the brute shot into consideration, it warps your view a little. so the shield may do that, therefore the pistol wouldnt actually leave. (maybe.)

whos to say that the warthog should be in the cameras fov? maybe it moves just enough to keep it out of sight.

I thought he did mean it literally, because they do it with the honor guard helmets in Halo 2. In a cutscene, you can see them take the helmets off the Elites and put them on their own heads.

They appear to be wearing just the helmet, not the mouth pieces. The mouth pieces are not attached to the helmet. (except for on the Elite space suit) Besides, they probably wouldn't just start sending troops into battle with old helmets that don't fit. They were most likely make for the brutes. As I said before, they are a symbol of rank.
