Decoding Bitmaps

Well I want to write my own bitmap decoding class. I have the raw byte array already read, what I need to do is make it into a viewable image. If everyone could just offer advise, maybe links to sites where it shows how bitmaps are decoded that would be great. Or if you could explain in scarce amounts maybe with some code here or there that would be great too. All help is appreciated!
