Well, I recently realized that it would be nifty to have a sort of drum machine in software form. For those that may have experience in this field, what are some reliable programs that are also free?

Well it's not free, But it's really cheap. I use it all the time for remixes. It's really nice, I recommend it, I actually know a lot of bands that use it too.
