Layout of Hex Reflexives-Advanced Modders Needed

I'm trying to work on enabling reflexives in hex. The only thing I can't understand is how the pieces of hex code near the beginning of a tag point to the chunks in a tag. I've heard something about an offset pointer but it doesn't seem to make sense anyway I decode it. I know most of the halo apps can read these reflexives. Can you tell me how these hex reflexive pointers work?
