halo having issues

ok i went to uninstall halo and it went well then i installed it again and it went well. then the problem was when i tried to play halo. i hit play halo then it would show the little halo box then it went to a screen like on channel 116 where it is bars of just colors and i had no idea what was going on and i couldnt play halo. then i installed the update without opening the game by going into the halo folder in the c drive and the update installed successfully. then i tried playing halo and it worked and i can play halo now fine. but do any of you have an idea for what was happening before i installed the update
