ok, i dont know if ur talking about a plane as in the flat object or a plane that flys so ill answer both. If its the flat plan it depends on how bumped, if u just want it slightly u can just use a bump map
go to material editor under render then get a raytrace material, go to maps, go to bump, click and pick a bump u would like, a brick, cement, etc. then pick how much u want it bumped by tyhe number next to the bump map under the map section, and apply it to the plane.
If u want a bigbump, then u need a map of black and whites, so go into a paint program and paint a white over black but make the edges of the brush fade so its smooth, so what im trying to say here is that if u want mountains then draw out where u want the mountains and the whiter it is then the higher the peak will be, or it could be the darker the higher dont remember but if its teh opposite then just invert the pic and try again. anyway once u have taht saved go into max and make ur plane. go udner the modifier tab and go down to displace map. in that click and open up ur map that u just made in photoshop or whatever, and then with the fallout and amplitude (ibelieve thats what they are named) u can change that number on how high u want the mountains to go, if they are too jagged for u and u rather want flowing hills, then go to the modifier tab and go down to meshsmooth and set the iterations to 1 or 2 i would suggest 1 so its less polys. Ask if u need anymore help i did that fast and confusing

If its a plane that u made (the flying kind) do the same thing as the first one, make ur material then go down to maps and set a bump to it, just pic a bump from the material library, a very light stuuco bump makes a good little bump, i use it for walls to make them more realistic. yeah just ask if u need any help on that stuff
