that was not all done by hand, It's called ...uh....what's that called... arraying and then welding (in a traditional sense) he probably used a lot of tools not available in max. He most likely used c4d.

Well, its not bad but it is all easy to do, for the bit that shows cross section, thats just pure easy with some lofting, for all of the spinny bits you could do an easy array modifier, you could lathe half of it. The rest is just boxes with extrusions with a wire which is just a spline that is renderable and turned to EM or EP. The materials are poor and the general render is rubbish. The detail is nice but still is all simple, I could model that in.. 3-5 hours.
