need help on new server

i am somewhat new at hosting my own server, i have it working fine. when i download custom maps or edited maps it will either not start the map and start the next one on the init.txt list or when i do start it when someone loggs on to play it crashes them and the server. do i need to do something other that download the map files. please help i am new, sorry for the stupid questions.......
