Finish a new model/mesh? Got something you're working on? Finish a new map? Here's the place to post it for feedback and whatnot.

Cote d'Azur needs texturing, glass, and water... and help!!!

Post by andrew matlock »

hi, it's my first time using 3ds Max, and I've run into some snags. I'm making a square kilometer map of the downtown core in Cote d'Azur (the city that was nuked on Sigma Octanus in the first book.) So far, I just have the planes, stratoscrapers (around 30), and office buildings/malls. Nothing is textured yet. This is the problem. After much trial and error, I figured out the whole material editing thing and the application process. Is their any simpler way of JUST PUTTING a bitmap or JPEG on a surface?!!! GAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!! Anywho, I welcome input on the map. I have the red base set up as the Museum, and the blue base set up as a UNSC base. There's a walk-in mall, an office building with a bridge leading to rooftops, lots of billboards for sniping, trees, lampposts, lots of jumps for the hogs, and a parking garage. Can anyone think of anything else to add? Oh yeah, how do you make glass (destructable)... and water. Sorry about my 3ds MAx 6 incompetance. Wait... can you even use 3ds MAx 6 with the HEK?!!!! Aww crap!

i cant reply to you atm but you do know you cant make a KM long map.
there are limits on size, like 16,000 units wide which is REALLY big, noone needs a 1km wide map, it would take forever to get accross.
also you do know of polygon limits and if you go over the effects of it right?

That would take an aggrivatingly long ass time to run across a map 1km in length. Unless you had a ph3ar of seeing other MCs in the level. Spartanphobia I believe it's called... 8) Also as GHL pointed out, it wouldn't be physically possible for practical size limitations.

as far as size goes i made a 32000 x 24000 x 16000 map once, nothing fancy just hills, it took like 3 hours to compile a light map but it did load in halo. hehehe i took like 5 mins to cross in a hog hehehe

try using deep paint 3d

it installs a plugin to 3ds max 6 that puts textures into it and you can draw right on the model  its prety cool

and max 6 does work with the hek

GHL, 16,000 is definetly not the limit on size and it is definetly possible to make a 1km wide map.
