3ds problem: cant cut or crop 2 shapes

Post by akmassassin »

ok,
I got theses 2 shapes in 3ds: one is a wall (box) and the other is a tube (passage in my base) passing thru it. But I dont know how to cut or crop the part of the box that is in the hole of the tube(u know to to let the passage open to walk in it). so if anyone knows the command to cut, crop, or delete that part, please help me!
thx

select the object you want the hole to be in then go to the create tab and choose compound object then choose boolean and then click "pick operand B" and then click the bit you want to make the hole WITH.

make sure that you select all the verticies to the object and click weld (with the threshold at the default .1). otherwise you will run into errors sometimes having to do with radiosity(oddities in shadows).

ha just go read through 3d max tutorials, there are THOUSANDS, booleaning is a beginners "trick", I would go through some tuts before you start modeling in halo so you arnt taking 34 times as long. www.3ducation.com has 90 beginners tuts hopefully soon will have 300+ total if you have dial up stay away from it until the dial version is up but other than that you should be fine.

Booleans are probably the worst possible way to do what you want. The results are extremely messy. Look for some tutorials on using Edit Poly in 3ds max and the "cut" tool in particular for this type of operation.
