Finish a new model/mesh? Got something you're working on? Finish a new map? Here's the place to post it for feedback and whatnot.

A simple skinning tutorial

Post by frozenflames »

I've gotten tired of so many "how do u skin" questions, that i decided to make a tut. Here goes...

-Get Adobe Photoshop and HMT
-Get the .dds plugin for photoshop (http://www.halomods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4192)
-Open up a map in HMT and go to the bitmaps tag
-Find the bitmap u want to edit and click "save texture"
-Open that file in Photoshop
-Edit it however u want
-When done, click save as(to keep an origonal incase u mess something up)
-Select .dds as the file type
-a .dds save menu shud come up, u need to select the same alpha channel as the orig picture(the alpha channel for a pic can b found right above the picture in HMT)
-Save it
-Go back into HMT and find the bitmap uve been working with
-Click "Inject Texture"
-Find the file u messed with in Photoshop and double click
-Save and Enjoy

I hope that this helps.

Edit--
Ive also seen ppl ask what u do with a .dds file.

-Extract it if it was in a .rar or .zip
-Open HMT
-Open a map
-open the bitmaps tag and find the bitmap u want to change
-Click inject texture
-Find ur .dds file and double click
- Save

rather, but some skinning tutorials may be harder to understand than others. although skinning is fu**ing easy. and same with modelling.

actually i counter my own post... you can use paintshop pro.... just convert the .dds to a .jpeg and then reconvert it.

PaintShop Pro can use the Adobe plugin's too. Just use the same DDS plugin your using for Photoshop in your 'PaintShop Pro/Plugins' folder and you can open and save just the same :)

In PSP 7 go to;
'File -> Preferences -> File Locations' and then the 'Plugins' tab,
should be similar for PSP8 I guess.

i use paintshop pro and there is no reason to convert it. all you do is put the same plugin in the plugins folder and get a few dll's and it works just like photoshop same things happen when you save. if anyone needs help setting the psp way up aim me at TSPoseidon03 im on in the
afternoon-the night
