I bought the 18 for $1,487 including tax and haven't had a single problem.
I can say from experience that it can play Fallout 3 and UT3 on ultra high without stuttering.

No it isn't...
I have a 2.4 ghz dual core, 2 gb of ram, 320 hdd, 15.5 inch screen with bright view and wxga and 1200x1600 resolution and that 9600gt video card, and my computer costed 1000 dollars. So I don't know what is incorrect.

Edit: the blurray dvd drive costed 200 dollars more.

Getting as close as is possible to my set up adds up to $1,327.99 not including tax.
$70 more gets you 2.1 simulated surround, an 18" screen, media bar, and a 9600m GT.
And this is off what is currently available, not whenever you bought yous.

Man Crytic, my build which is $200 more comes with 12GB of RAM, Core i7 920, and a GTX 295. Granted I have no OS cost, Monitor cost, Hard drive or CPU cooler.
