DDS Skinning Problem

Post by swese44 »

Hey guys. I can't edit all of the DDS files. I extract them with HMT 3.5 and edit with Adobe Photoshop 7.0. A lot of images are fine, like vehicle skins and rock textures. But when I go to save the changes to other images like the moon or the halo ring or tree leaves, it tells me "alph information will be lost". I save anyway, but then HMT tells me "image must be DXT1" when I try to reinject it. It tells me the same thing whether I save the image as DXT1 or as DXT1 with alpha. I've seen several mods with these images changed so I know it's possible. Anyone have this figured out? Thanks a lot.

you need to check what kind of dxt file it is when you export it. i believe the moon and whatever else you said are not dxt1.

then export the file with the correct dxt# format

hope that helps, S

Also, in HMT, when u go to import a dxt1 and it needs a dxt2/3 it tells u u need a dxt1. If u go to import a dxt2/3 and it needs a dxt1 it tells u u need a dxt2/3. It's a glitch in HMT. Just look at the bitmap above the preview pic. It will tell u there what format u need to save it in.

I have a similar problem too. I'm trying to skin a NTSC Xbox ghost, so far I've;

Got a BG cache file using SparkEdit (from the cache.tmp file),

Extracted the ghost1.dds (vehicles\ghost\bitmaps\ghost) using HMTv3.5,

Edited it to how I wanted and saved using; DXT1 (1bit Alpha) & Use exisiting MIP map Is this the correct format? :?

Then injected my new skin back in using HMT, compressed it using Sparkedit (it looked perfect in the models preview in Sparkedit by the way) and played the level.

Problems:
The Ghost remains PURPLE when it should be green but the decals I put on there can be seen through the purple, is there another shader or something I need to edit? You can almost see a green tint coming through but I have no idea where the purple is coming from.

Thanks in advance for any help.

the purple... it comes from another bitmap, maybe a cubemap or something.

anyway, try swapping ghost-related bitmaps with something else until the purple disappears

then you'll know which bitmap it is that needs to be changed
