A Warning

I signed up, but a friend sent me this link, which claims it is a scam. I did some more Googling and haven't really found anyone else saying it's a scam, so I'm still doubtful. So far I seem unaffected. My recommendation: to be on the safe side use a username, password, and email that you are not using anywhere else (for email try Mailinator.com, no signup needed). I hope this helps people.

I used a unique password for that very reason. I don't trust anything that claims to be free.

That their address is for namecheap.com only means that is who they used to register their website, no?

The address is for WhoisGuard, a whois protection service to prevent spam to the domain owner provided for FREE by namecheap.com.

Seems there may be some call for danger, but the fact that you're able to upload appears to still remain. I'd advise against anyone signing up for the pay accounts, and I'll be using an alternate email and unique password as well.

Whoever posted that seems to be a complete idiot. He is directly pointing out that the Whois you're getting is designed to be masked, and that it can be used by many people. If I use a whois privacy feature on GoDaddy, and a Nazi site uses it too, that clearly makes me a Nazi, right? I mean, the information would be the same, after all. He points out that the information will be the same on many sites, then picks one that will scare ignorant people, a scam site, and then says he doesn't want to use it. It doesn't make any sense.

I wasn't agreeing with him or trying to use that information to sway anyone. I clearly said that the information was basically just some guy at some forum; credibility was never brought into play. My only point was for people to use caution.

No need to get defensive. Tural was giving feedback on the source you posted, nothing personal. And what he said is completely true -- a whois can be masked by an ISP as an (often free) service -- it doesn't necessarily mean they have something to hide.

That's kind of the point. Whois isn't a reliable tool because its easily available, of course the majority of it will be masked or generalized. Stick to The fine print. >__>

I don't understand this post. The phrase "That's kind of the point" makes it sound like you're posing a statement in contrast to what he said, but you're agreeing with him and restating what has been said before. He knows that's the point, that's why he said it.

I fail to see what posting their web host has to do with anything.
The first guy who claimed it was a scam never proved anything. He just said "I signed up and it's a scam." He never said they took his password or anything, he's just saying it because he thinks it is. He even said he has nothing to support his claim.
All of the whois information doesn't matter, because it doesn't show anything important, at all.

Nobody here has posted ANYTHING that even remotely implicates them in ANY fraudulent activity.

And now you deleted your post, making this thread useless. Well whatever.
