Nothing bungie is doing is preventing any cheating as far as gamerscores or profiles are concerned and there is no other type of cheating possible. LIVE/PIRS containers are safe so no maps will be modified to allow cheating online.

The only thing Bungie is doing is saying that uploading modified content to their shares will get you banned (and even then, they have to go and find it, because I had left some stuff in there from a long time ago when I was trying to get my hands on some stuff and I *just* took it out.

It was a sarcastic response to someone's comment..

I'm guessing not, as I can't see any way of automatically telling, but do you think this includes unmodified screenshots of modified films? You know, they might have a warehouse full of starving children looking for this kind of thing. If not, I have some people to lie to about my new Recon armour... hehehe....

What.
This is specifically about modding.
Why would you ask about things that aren't modified?

My bad. I meant to say UNmodified shots of Modded films. Like mod Recon unto yourself in a film, taking pictures, then uploading it to your file share to fool a few idiots. Or, for example, a film of a modified map.

Write your name out in Forge, then take a picture of that with you standing next to it in your Recon armor. Then just upload the shot to your computer with one of the screenshot utils.

If you have modded forge variants on your hard drive and don't play them online and keep them off your file share then would you get banned? Because at the moment whenever I want to play online I delete all of the modded stuff just to be on the safe side.

Thanks.

The content of your hard drive does not get uploaded for Bungie to see. If it isn't on your file share, it isn't a problem yet.

Is this an auto detect thing? So, as soon as you upload a modded file, BANT! Or are users just encouraged to dob their friends in?

They can always scan their database for known mods, but it is mostly a reporting thing.

They could easily check it against a list of spawnable items and the max amount of each item you could have on a map.

That would be overwhelmingly time consuming to scan through the files for that sort of thing. They would have to read through every single file's item lists, for every single file in their database. The more practical solution is to maintain a database of modified signatures, then just check the values of the file shares to that list, not actually read through the content of the usermap.

It would only take a cuple seconds per forge map.

Yes, which amounts to an impractically long time to search through all items being hosted. That is not a feasible solution on any grounds, and for them to do it would be completely unreasonable. That's not going to happen anytime soon. It would take days, even weeks, of non-stop checks to do what you're talking about, and that doesn't even account for the issue of files being added and removed while they're going. It would not make any sense, at all, for them to do anything like that. It's not going to happen, and for you to call it 'easy' is grossly inaccurate.

Yeah, I was gonna post (before I got distracted) and say pretty much exactly what you said Tural. Maybe one way they could do it is via an autoupdate to the game which makes each console perform such a scan on each item before it lets you upload it to your fileshare, but that would do nothing to stop modded screenshots...

Unlikely at best.

The file gets copied to bungies servers, all they would have to do is perform a check that would only take a cuple milliseconds to loop 640 times.

You just said it would take a few seconds. Be consistent if you're going to argue your case.

Ok, it would take a cuple seconds to load the whole file. It would take a cuple milliseconds to only check the spawn data.
