I don't understand why the phrase changed when it got to the U.S. It doesn't make sense.
Bothers me too. It doesn't even make sense, yet people say it just because it's been said so much that they don't question how illogical it is. Even taken sarcastically, it does not make sense in most contexts, because people don't use it sarcastically, they just use it as a normal phrase. You have to have context that supports the sarcasm for it to be sarcastic, and nobody has that. They aren't saying it to be sarcastic, they are saying it because it's so commonly used that they don't take issue with it. It isn't a clever use of sarcasm, it is just incorrect and illogical. Even if someone were to challenge that they made a conscious effort to be sarcastic by using that phrase, it really just makes them look like a fool because they're still using a phrase that was manipulated not to be sarcastic, rather just on behalf of stupidity, in the first place. It would be saying "I know the people who made this made it wrong, but I use it anyways, because I'm so clever I can change the history and connotation of the phrase." No, it just looks dumb.
