The contract and service provider isn't an issue at all.
The pre-release betas of the 2.0 firmware were jailbroken pretty quickly, there's nothing to suggest this firmware won't be jailbroken and unlockable.
And Bacon... apparently the Android OS *should* be able to be loaded onto the iPhone/iPod Touch quite easily. So that's not really an issue, at least not to me.
I'm tempted to sell my iPod to get one... but only once it's easily unlockable and if all the 1.1.x apps are compatible with it.
Anyone else here got a jailbroken iPod/iPhone?
Here's some screenies of my iPod

If there is a relatively easy way to break it onto T-Mobile, and they FINALLY launch a data 3G network (hurf durf), I'd go for it.

iGEEo, it IS a problem for the Americas at least. You have to sign up to a 2 year contract and activate it before you can even have the phone in your possesion...
What does that mean? You can't just take it home and unlock it unless you want to pay AT&T a heft sum for a contract cancellation...
I got a jailbroken Touch...I did it for casual things like Sketches, iCopter and Gameboy4iPhone (pokemon Red baby!). I find all themes for them horrid. To drink some Apple KoolAid (not that its available here), I think the interface is near perfect. The only change it needed for me was to give it a sleek black dock instead of that gray mesh thing.
What's that Windows XP controlling app though? Man, I should just hassle you on MSN one day for it all instead of here

I currently see no reason to pay for Firmware 2.0. I'll wait and see what the app store is like.........It also costs money for those apps. So what's the point in upgrading to pay for games (since thats all it seems to have)?

I use the default theme most of the time. It is pretty much perfect. The cheese grater dock only came with the 1.1.3 firmware I believe, before that it was a slick black (chadwarden) dock.
What firmware are you on Scotty?
And yeah, I read about the activation thing. I'm sure there will be some form of loop hole to delay activation or something. I hope.
