Are there any musicians in the house?

I'm trying to learn the Kabalevsky Violin Concerto, but... It's kinda tough... does anybody have tips for practicing and learning a difficult chunk of music...?

Start slow and go one measure at a time.

well...i learn by ear. And i only can only read bass music. What i do is i warm up my hands. listen to the song over and over. then just start playing to it.

That has worked for all my songs

When I tried to learn this one song, Angels Don't Kill - Children of Bodom (a VERY hard song on guitar,) I learned measure by measure at about half temo, and then just sped it up by about 5bpm each time i nailed it on a tempo. That worked really well for me.

Buy a metronome or download metronome software and play it slowly. Practice it until you can do it 100% at the speed you were playing it at and then try it a little bit faster until you have it 100%. Keep doing this until you are doing at the regular speed it is supposed to be at. This will take a while, but it should be worth it.

Definitely start slow, but spend time working out fingerings. It sounds like you should be able to play the song just shifting positions every measure or so.

sure sounds tough. aside from what's already been said, just practice alot.

oh, and if you can, try to sight read music as much as possible. it'll keep you on your toes, make you a better player, and keep you from spending all your time on one piece. if you spend all your time on one thing, it'll lose it's appeal, and just not be much fun anymore. sure, you'll be able to play it well, but not necessarily other pieces.
