Update to the git master of Compiz. There is a "cylinder" mode that will make it a lot smoother. Also, I could do a lot better by complicating things - multiple wallpapers would yield better results as I could make it nice and thin and still have the right number of, um, circle things.

Since you bumped this, I might as well post this video.

CCSM -> General Options -> Desktop Size:
Horizontal: 4
Vertical: 1
Number of Desktops: 1 (Compiz does not use "desktops", I'm still waiting for this to be removed...)

Xubuntu works excellently on extremely old hardware. I installed it on my grandfather's old PC after I built him a new one, and set it up as a web browsing terminal.

1.3 Ghz P4 (First Gen or something)
384 MB of ram, it came with 128
and an 8GB HDD I found lying around.

The only problem is that the HDD ran out of space so XFCE fails to login *shrug*
h4xmb? mb.

Sounds good, I think it's a PIII with 256MB Ram and 20GB ish HD, so it should run decently, probably better than xp at least.

Get yourself an 8.04, released 5 days ago.

I used to run one of my family's desktops on a Live CD - it had a lot of viruses. It ran faster on the live CD than it did the day we installed XP. Even I was amazed.

Actually I would say the speed of the drive is a HUGE factor in live CD speed. My mom's PC has two drives, one came with the PC originally (97-ish) and the other one is newer (it can read DVDs). It took twenty minutes for the live CD to boot off the old one, and only eight off of the newer one. (For comparison, XP came up in about 5-6 minutes when it ran).

My CD drive is faster, and my DVD drive is iffy when it comes to actually working. Believe me, it ran faster, except when it came to starting a program with a large physical file size, you'd have to wait a bit, but it was the actual running that was faster. I won't ignore the possibility of a horribly slow hard drive, though, but I'm sure it's not that slow.

It's not bad, I can't get the wireless card for my laptop to work, but it's kind of a pos and I've only tried a few times.

I've been looking at gOS and it has pretty low system reqs, plus it has AWN dock w/o video hardware acceleration! :D (Don't need a vidya card to use it,I think)
Also, it's pretty.

I don't know of any wireless drivers for linux, so that would be a problem. Try googling it before you erase anything.

If it's anything but a Broadcom chipset, it should work fine. That's the rule for wireless. Broadcom has announced that they will try and improve their support, though.

In related news, Valve has let leak some very crucial information: They're extremely interested in their own port of Source games. I say "let leak" because Valve themselves never announced anything - but they have job openings in their higher software development levels where the primary goal will be to port games to Linux (it says it word for word "port to Linux"). A full report was released by Phoronix (just the #1 news source for Linux). Also, Postal. Which is very specific when it came to a Linux port.

Sweet! Steam seemed to work pretty well with linux last time I tried it (about a year ago) so it should run just fine. :D
