Creating new levels
Hello all, i just started to get into this and i have a few questions. When i make the "Parent Box" what size should it generally be? I'm guess it needs to be huge becasue you need to put other boxes or shapes inside of it which would be the level. So basically what size should i make my Parent Box. What location should i put it on my grid and shoul i hide it?

If you're referring to the reference frame box, that can be any size you want. If you're talking about the actual level, it does need to be a box, not a plane, and the size should be about 5000x5000x2000 for a small to medium sized level. I wouldn't make anything less than 2000x2000x1500 or anything more than 15000x15000x5000...that size just gets too big.
Hope that helps

Thanks a bunch, that cleared up ALOT of stuff. Also i remember seeing/reading about the master cheif like model or something, they were using it to see what size they had to make the doorways. If this is covered in a tutorial or something let me know, dont bother explaining.
EDIT: Also does the refrence frame need to be touching the actual map box or can it just anywhere was long as its "linked" via the "select and link" method.

everything i say is a lie!
HAWK:
It needs to be a box so you can apply the sky material to it. If you've already started doing a plane, that's fine, just bring the four sides of the plane up and create a couple of faces to create the "roof" of the level.
BACK_LIGHT:
The model of the master chief was not included in the installation package for some reason. When you're in your level, go to File>Merge> select the tutorial.max file found in levels\test\tutorial\models (I think) and select the master chief model to merge....It'll show up in your level then.
The reference frame should not come in contact with the level. I tried compiling a level like that and it gave me an error...something about the geometry being effed. Just link the level to the frame and you should be fine.

Ok, so far i have "succesfully" made it to the end of part one of the tutorial. I ran into a small problem where the ground was on 2 walls but i think that was an error on my part (not selection those walls for some reason). Thanks for all the help so far. Once i know what im doing i'll be pumping out some promising maps. Do you have AIM or IRC kirks4?
