Letters don't show up when i try to talk to people!

When i play halo ce or pc, my letters don't show up when i press T then type... it also doesn't show people getting killed... like..... john killed joey or bill betrayed andrew..... no text.... i recently reloaded my computer and it showed text before.... what am i missing?
