?.. The news?.. a Slusho! member who they meet at some point?.. an army radio?..

I agree with iGeo.. normally a movie has a beginning, middle and end.. but with this it felt like you were just getting the middle.. and whilst still being amazing, I would have also preferred some sort of explanation :\

In the event of such a giant monster destroying a city, such information wouldn't be readily available within the few hours it occurred in. On top of that, information like that would be classified. There wasn't enough down time to where they could fit in the backstory of where it came from. If they gave every bit of information about it in the movie, it would take away from the chaotic nature of the film. They leave you wanting to know why, where, etc. It's suspense, that's their entire goal.

They could have better used the 20 odd minutes at the beginning of the film with the party scene, it was hardly worth it. Could have been like 5 minutes long, then used the other 15 or so minutes better elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I thought the film was excellent... but when it's about a skyscraper sized marine creature attacking humans, realism is hardly what I'm looking for.

Then why does it need the complete backstory?

The party scene effectively hooked the audiences into the lives of the people, at least it made me care what happened to them. If I just saw a bunch of random people who I barely knew anything about in a movie running from some monster, I wouldn't care. The realism was an important part of this technique.

Because that's what I like. Not a backstory... a story. It's my preference.
