Earlier I was thinking about how our society's technology has grown. I started thinking about SIMULATED reality stuff, and I wondered if anyone thought it could be done. So I am asking; Do you think it will ever be possible?
If you do or don't think its possible, tell why or why not.
()

Wikipedia sez:
Virtual reality (VR) is a technology which allows a user to interact with a computer-simulated environment, be it a real or imagined one. Most current virtual reality environments are primarily visual experiences, displayed either on a computer screen or through special or stereoscopic displays, but some simulations include additional sensory information, such as sound through speakers or headphones. Some advanced, haptic systems now include tactile information, generally known as force feedback, in medical and gaming applications. Users can interact with a virtual environment or a virtual artifact (VA) either through the use of standard input devices such as a keyboard and mouse, or through multimodal devices such as a wired glove, the Polhemus boom arm, and omnidirectional treadmill. The simulated environment can be similar to the real world, for example, simulations for pilot or combat training, or it can differ significantly from reality, as in VR games. In practice, it is currently very difficult to create a high-fidelity virtual reality experience, due largely to technical limitations on processing power, image resolution and communication bandwidth. However, those limitations are expected to eventually be overcome as processor, imaging and data communication technologies become more powerful and cost-effective over time.
Ok, I see now. But what I was talking about was something else. Like, one where you see, smell, feel, hear, and taste everything. Haha, although, the feeling part wouldn't be to awesome in shooters and stuff like that.
That would be simulated reality. Wikipedia sez that you would need a situation similar to The Matrix for that to happen. It also said Sony is working on a "beam" of some sorts that is noninvasive. It is designed to give the same effects, but has yet to be tested.
Ahh, I see. Well, does anyone think SIMULATED reality would be possible?
I think one way to actually simulate taste and everything is a kind of helmet that you wear that sends a signal to your brain triggering something that causes you to think that your actually tasteing or smelling something.
"The idea of a simulated reality raises several questions:
Is it possible, even in principle, to tell whether we are in a simulated reality?
Is there any difference between a simulated reality and a 'real' one?
How should we behave if we knew that we were living in a simulated reality? "
So, there is a possibility that we are living in a simulated reality, such as the matrix.
Also, I don't think a helmet would work for this kind of stuff. I think heavy duty equipment would be needed. It is brain manipulation.
What I think he means is, like an interactive virtual reality. Move objects, talk to people, solve problems all in real time in a fake world.
Some day I don't see why not technology is ever changing and with each new day people think of brilliant ideas. There probably will be at some point and time, but of course there will be controversy surrounding the topic like virtual terrorism and other such things. Yes, I do believe there will be some day soon a technology as this.
what? you mean like matrix style plug and play virtual reality? hek yes. we are already so close. in medical labs they have the power to hook you up, and make you see taste smell ANYTHING that they want. it just involves electrical stimulation to the brain.

lol! i just posted onthe same topic without even reading yours yet!
As much as I'd like to disagree with that, I think it's true... If you were to create such a thing for scientific purposes (testing, etc) is there any way to perfectly duplicate a living thing into software form, i.e. create every part of that grass, down to DNA level into software form. Want my opinion? Grow a garden.
Alot of people these days are so dependant on their technology that if something were to happen a lot of people would be so lost and confused if that technology were to ever take it away. I was watching this show on discovery about possible threats from terrorism and the biggest known scare isnt from a nuclear blast but from a EMP blast set off over a country. The effects of it literally would fry every working circuit in all electronic devices effected by the blast.
So while your pondering about living in VR, imagine now not having any electronics at all to rely on? Welcome to steam engines and telegraphs.
Can true VR be done? Sure, the human mind is capable of anything it seems. Is it a good thing? No, a Kirk said, to many people these day are spending time growing gardens in Animal Crossing and not actually growing a real garden in the real world.
As I tell people in Halo servers who constantly talk about how much they "pwn" at halo..
"Dude, Go outside and play. The grass out there doesn't have pixels, the rez is awesome and you only lag if your fat."
Life is not how you survive the storm, but how you dance in the rain
OMG. I'm going to have nightmares now about having my ipod touch, laptop, server, my bro's computer, my sister's computer, my dad's computer, my mom's computer, the TV, the other TV, the other other TV, my phone, my dad's phone, my mom's phone, my PSP, the Wii and all other electronic devices in our house that we couldn't live without going dead in a split second.
Thanks a lot.

Why...
Instead of all this simulating reality crap, why not just get out and do it.
I understand like shooter games you can't really go out and do, but I still think this whole "Simulation" thing isn't really fun at all. I rather go out and shoot a dear, bring it home and have it for dinner then shoot it in a game, take a millisecond to be transported "home" and then have the taste of venison in your mouth.
Virtual reality is already about it just isnt as advanced as many may think.
Saying it is not practical is pushing a little as there was a time when people thought a petrol car would not be practical due to diesel vehicles.
Wait a few decades or maybe a century if the planet is still here and virtual reality will be off age.
Besides don't you have days when dreams seem more real than being awake?
