modding the xbox help

i modded halo 2 a couple years ago and i want to mod again but i dont remember how and i heard that now you can mod without using splinter cell or mec assault or that other game and u don't need a memory card and i've looked and couldn't find any tutorials anywhere is that true that u can mod a reg. xbox without those things any more and can someone post a link to a good modding tutorial i looked through the forums but couldn't find one
