HaLo 2: Multiplayer Revision

Post by HaLo2FrEeEk »

Hey guys, I don't know if this'll be a big thing as I'm pretty new to the modding scene, but I figured I'd try. This started out as a project for myself, but once I got going and it turned out pretty cool I decided to release it to you guys.

The Halo 2: Multiplayer Revision is almost exactly what it sounds like, a vresion of Halo 2 that only has multiplayer. It includes all the new maps up to Desolation and Tombstone, and they all work. This wasn't a complicated mod, but being my first I'm kinda proud at how it turned out.

The mainmenu.map is modded to remove the blue filter, and also removes the text for Campaign and Xbox Live, I replaced the text for Split Screen with Custom Games, as well. In addition, I've removed the Multiplayer Maps from the mainmenu entirely so even if you do select where it says Campaign, there will be no maps, it will say you haven't unlocked them. Foundation is also unlocked for those of you who haven't completed campaign, it comes unlocked to start with.

The Start Screen:

Like I said, this isn't an outstanding or complicated mod, but it might be helpful to those people who only want to play multiplayer with friends, as this works over system link.

I also changed the loading video, as well as the attract_60 one, and completely removed the credits one, since with no campaign, there will be no way to view it. I also removed a few other uneeded things, such as the media folder, which contains fonts for campaign, and the update, dashupdate, and downloader.xbe, and changed the internal name of the default.xbe to reflect the name of this project: Halo 2: Multiplayer Revision.

I'm giving several ways of downloading this, you can download the patch for mainmenu.map in either serenity or sppf formats, both have been tested and work.

Serenity Patch (915 KB)
SPPF Patch (2 MB)

If you want to only experience the new mainmenu, apply one of these patches. If you want to have the rest of the experience, follow these instructions:

1. apply one of the above patches to a clean mainmenu.map
2. create a folder on your xbox harddrive called Halo 2: Multiplayer Revision
3. create 2 folders inside that folder called bink, and maps
4. download this package containing the modified default.xbe, and the modified loading and attract videos.
5. ftp intro_60.bik and attract_60.bik to the bink folder you created on your xbox
6. ftp default.xbe to the Halo 2: Multiplayer Revision folder on your xbox
You should now have 3 items in the Halo 2: Multiplayer Revision folder: a folder called bink, a folder called maps, and default.xbe
7. ftp all the maps from Halo 2 (including the new ones (yes, that's including derelict and highplains)), and the shared.map (you don't ned single_player_shared) to the maps folder, along with the fonts folder found in the maps folder on the Halo 2 disc. If you can't get the maps, or the font folder, you can download the fonts folder here, and the maps from here.
8. check that you have everything done, your file tree should look like this:

Code: Select all

Halo 2: Multiplayer Revision
  |-bink
    |-attract_60.bik
    |-intro_60.bik
  |-maps
    |- fonts
      |- (all the fonts files, there are 36 of them, I don't feel like writing them all out)
    |- (all the maps, there are 25 of them, I don't feel like writing them all out)
  |-default.xbe
If it does, then restart your xbox and load the game. If not, you did something wrong and you need to review the instructions.

Alternately, you can burn this to a disk be creating this same file structure on your computer's harddrive, then opening an Xbox ISO creator (I use c-box tool 2) and creating an xISO, then using a burning software to burn it to a DVD-R.

I've burned a disc and can confirm that it works in a modded xbox under both evox and XBMC (The only ones I tested), it unfortunately does not work on an unmodded box or an Xbox 360.

That all being said, I hope you enjoy this release, let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks to:
Prey, for making a great mainmenu editing tool: Menu Menu Menu!
Monkey Terd, for helping me with various different troubles, and recommending ProjectP
Anthony, for creating ProjectP

Everyone else who helped!

it looks really good so far. I take it you spent most of your time on the main menu. keep on goin.

Not to be changing the subject, but how exactly did you do that? what programs or what...idk anything?

I used Menu Menu Menu by Prey to edit the maps on the mainmenu and remove the blue filter, ProjectP by Anthony to get all the information (description, picture, etc) for the new maps, and a modified version of Entity by Monkey Terd to edit the Unicode strings to remove Campaign and Xbox Live, and to chance Split Screen. It was quite a bit of work (what with all the cross referencing and everything). I also used various other programs too, like I used photoshop with nVidia's DDS plugin to fix the pictures. I'm really glad you all like this, it was quite a job for me being my first ever thing, but I'm proud how it came out.

srry but looks like all you did was remove the blue filter, changet the text and delete the SP maps. Might wanna try to mod one of the MP mpas as there a lot of main menu's and apps for doing this laying around. If you want to learn some cool things hit me up on aim and I can show you a thing or two :P

For A first I have to say it's better than a lot of others, even if it's a mainmenu. It shows that you know how to do some simple stuff in modding, but it also shows you figured out how to use different programs and come out with a good out come.
Good Job.

Looks great for a mod and even better for a first. I think that with time, you'll be amazing.
I have really got to get my modded xbox back to my house to test some of these new mods coming out. :P

Thanks for the input everyone, I really apperciate it.

and Grim, you're right, all I did was remove the blue filter, remove the campaign and xbox live text, and remove the campaign maps, I also, however, added the new maps, along with all their information, and the picture, in the order they would be displayed if they were purchased and installed like normal. Did I also mention that this was my first attempt at anything modding-wise? I had never done anything before this, so does the fact that I figured out how to use these programs, do what I want, AND burn it to a disc thus making a usable product count for nothing? This wasn't meant to be a MOD perse, but a product, which it is. If I'd wanted to have modded mp maps, I would have taken longer modding the maps, but that wasn't my goal.

I did FTP, I'm not stupid, I've had my website now for more than a year, I know how file transfer protocol works, that's how I tested the whole thing, but when it was done, it was convenient to burn it to a disc.
