How I view NASCAR is how I view professional gaming, but a bit more serious...
Yeah, you do need to have some skill to concentrate and go that speed for a long amount of time and do well, but on the same level, all you're doing is turning left. It's tougher than being a professional gamer though, because you tend to have that death consequence if you mess up.

In video games you die if you mess up too, just not in real life
Haha yeah I don't think it's a sport or anything, but I do have some respect(I don't hold them in extremely high regard or anything) for pro gamers and think they're far from a joke.

Consider this. If video games are sports, and there are sport games, would people start making video games about video games?

No, although they do make videos about it and make TV shows just like MLB, etc.

If you die in the game, you die for real.

Okay to end the sport non sport thing think of it this way. At one point in time football, basketball, baseball, every other sport imaginable was a hobby that evolved into a sport. I don't think the first football players played for money they made up a game and played for fun and enjoyment, and to hit the crap out of the other guy lol. So there fore video games can be considered a sport its a hobby that has excelled to the status of sport like everything else its for entertainment by a certain public that and nothing more. so yes you can be a pro at it just as any other sport. And all pro's arn't cocky i know for a fact of personal experience that team Carbon is a bunch of awesome guys that gave me and my teammates tips at MLG Florida some on the other hand *cough, cough* Ogre's *cough* arn't that nice. But yes you can be a professional gamer.

Reading this made me look at it this way: If video games are sports, and there are sport games, and let's say you could become 'pro' at these sports games, then you surely cannot be participating in a real sport (you're only practicing cyber sport here  )!

5. following as a business an occupation ordinarily engaged in as a pastime: a professional golfer.
11. a person who earns a living in a sport or other occupation frequently engaged in by amateurs: a golf professional.
12. an expert player, as of golf or tennis, serving as a teacher, consultant, performer, or contestant; pro.
13. a person who is expert at his or her work: You can tell by her comments that this editor is a real professional.

I just want to say, if you still live with your parents and go to school full time (high school etc.), you're most likely not going to be a "pro" at anything.
Would you really want the title of "professional gamer?" Giving people titles like that only causes problems by letting their ego's expand. You can see such problems in this thread alone.
I don't consider gaming anything more than a hobby. So to me no, you cannot be a professional gamer. Im sure there are people who make their living winning in video games, and thats fine for them. But I still wouldn't consider them professionals.

I think people can legitimately be Professional Gamers, I just don't think it can be called a sport.

Okay, let's see:

Golf: May be boring, but at least you're active, and outside, doing something that requires physical exertion outside just using your hands.

Nascar: Just as much of a sport than anything. I'd say it's a hell of a lot more physically demanding than gaming.

Fishing: At least you're not sitting on a couch. Plus, much like hunting, it produces something that you could actually use with a practical purpose.

Extreme Ironing: I know it sounds ridiculous (and yes, it is a legitimate sport, for those who didn't know), but considering some of the stuff they actually do, I'd say it's more legitimate as a sport than gaming is.

Gaming: Okay, let's see. You sit on a couch, or chair (Sometimes even standing. Oh you're extreme now!), and use a small device in your hands to control a character on a TV screen. The only way I could see gaming as a legitimate sport, is if they were playing something like the Wii (or DDR etc), cause then at least you're required to move something other than your hands.
