parental persuasion

Post by ramses »

well, I am 13 and my parents think xbox live is evil. apparently my dad is afraid of pedophiles and my mom has some other problem that she won't tell me about. I recently talked to them and made the following points:

1. Halo 3 is getting old. I got it less than a week ago. You can only play against yourself so many times.
2. we don't talk about real life. no one mentioned real life on runescape (yes i used to play runescape) except my real life friends
3. Community gaming is more healthy than solo gameing. "Dr. Deanna Guy, a pediatrician with Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and an expert on children and the Internet believes that community gaming is far healthier than solo computer gaming."
4. "The best way to avoid online predators is to make sure your children know they can come to you if things go wrong without worrying that you will over-react and throw the game console out with the bathwater."
5. Why would I give out my phone number? Why? I know the risks. Even if I did, I know not to answer the door. And you are supposed to be approachable so I can "...come to you if things go wrong without worrying that you will over-react and throw the game console out with the bathwater."
6. $50.00 every 13 months is a heck of a lot cheaper than $60.00 every few weeks for games. I will still want new games, but only every few months.
7."Communication is very important in Halo 2. In Team Games, Communication is vital to any organized team..." It's for halo 2 but what's the difference? and "Good Communication is the key to the best Team Play experiences on Xbox Live..."

I am at a loss at how they can argue against this. I asked my friend on my school bus if there was any point having an xbox 360 without live and he said "No. If you cant have live, sell it." Since i bought it less than 30 days ago, i may do just that.

I know this is a modding forum (sort of), but i don't trust myself to solder chips to my $350 investment.

any help/ testimonies that xbox live is good would be greatly appreciated.

edit: try to keep it clean. good job with that so far.

how is this: ping: 74 @~150 miles
downlowad: 1077kb/s
upload: 483kb/s
latency: 74ms
i am at bottom of stats for cable, so i am kind of worried

thanks in advance, Ramses

My parents are as stubborn as they get. No matter how much I'll prove a point correctly, they will stick to theirs. From my point of view, is that you need to allow them to set conditions. Such as, "If you get me Xbox Live, I'll do the dishes from dinner every other night." Something to that extent. Do not constantly bug them about it, don't be annoying. Be calm when asking, and when asking, bring up solid points from your side of the argument in case they aren't caving. A good point that I saw was the "Community gaming is more healthy than solo gaming" article you found.

Good Luck.

Just make a compromise with them...say you want to buy Xbox Live, but that you will disable voice and not use the microphone. As a user of Xbox Live for almost 4 years now, I can tell you that unless you're playing with friends, you're not missing anything by not having a mic.

If you don't have a mic and a headset, doesn't it display THEIR voices over the tv's speakers?

Well, anyways. You have good points, just use those, and the suggestions that Gametag and Aumaan made.

Which is why I said to disable the voices. You can do it on the 360, not sure about original Xbox, but I'm pretty sure he's talking about the 360.

You can change that. I'm pretty sure you can do somewhere within personal settings, or you can just mute all of them.

Edit: ahh, GTAF beat meh.

Ahh, I see, I didn't see that part.

Well in that case, I would suggest doing exactly what Gametag said. Plus, you can buy Xbox live without having to buy a mic if I'm not mistaken, so it also saves you SOME money.

Oh my god. I hate it so much when my parents stick their big fat noses into my business. Recently, my dad got concerned about what me and my siblings were "really doing" on our computers, if you get what I mean (and he has nothing to be worried about btw -_-), so he waves his magic wand and uses this OpenDNS service thing, and whenever we go to a bad site as defined by the OpenDNS database thingy, a page pops up preventing us from visiting there.

It's gotten extremely annoying, because I never go to any dirty sites, but I tried to go to Maddox's page one time to find out that it was blocked  Sucked big balls.

Well, anyway, your parents will probably be extremely stubborn when you try and persuade them, but keep trying. Just make sure you tell them you won't give out any personal info at all, and don't mention the cursing. If they ask about it, just tell them most of the players are mature and won't say stupid stuff. And then if you get Live, just make sure you get some headphones so blatant cursing won't be blasting out of the TV and your parents will take it right back away.

Edit: Gah!! Post invasion. Nevermind what I said, GTAF's suggestions pwns mine.

also point out that they can't shelter you forever, and that pedophiles don't meet teens on xbox live, they go to chat rooms. also ask why they're insulting your intelligence by thinking you freely hand out your address/phone # on the internet.

just don't be the typical mic-abusing kid, or i'll have to call your parents and have them revoke your internetz. please god, we don't need any more of those.

yep it is the 360. but even when i played halo 2 on xbc (xbox connect) people were talkning. of corse it was filled with cheat mods. i still don't see why that would be so bad. this 6th grader on my bus thinks he's an Italian terrorist who will bomb my house and kill me with his robots and the last thing i would see would be an explosion. he actually said that, too. so its not like i dont get the harassment at school. I saw that video too, its hilarious.

thanks for all the deacent posts, in the past, all i have gotten from different forums when i ask for advice is "sucks to be you" and "ROFLMAO" so you show that it is a good community, which shows it is good.

edit: try to keep it clean. I may show them this thread.

Did you mention that you previously played xbc to them? It seems that if they were okay with that, they should be okay with xbl.

Well your 13 so i dont blame your parents. But a good comprimise would be have it hooked up in the living room so they can monitor you, theyll likely be ok with this, theyll eventually see its not bad, and theyll get tired of u taking up the living room so theyll let you play elsewhere.
Don't be.

Go to the main menu of Halo 2, choose Settings, Player Profiles, select a profile, Edit, and choose the "Voice Output" section. You can choose Speakers (TV speakers), Xbox Live Communicator (headset), Both, or Neither. That'll change your master voice output settings.

However, if you press Y to show your friend's list, press X to show more options, and choose the "Voice Output" section, I believe you can choose one of the four options above to temporarily trigger a different option if your master voice output selection is different. For example, if you have your master output set at Xbox Live Communicator, you can go to your friend's list during a game and choose Speakers to have voice output on your TV speakers for just that game (I'm pretty sure; that's what seems to happen to me).

But who is going to take him? That is a good idea though, because for one thing, they cant take it from you because YOU bought it. Its your property, and they have no right to take it away. Besides their fake 'Parental Authority'.

I'm pretty sure even if you use a pre-paid Xbox Live subscription, it will prompt you for a credit card.

Didn't for me. I figured it would so I asked my mom for it but turns out I didn't have to, just asks for Contact Info.
