Every modding program should be downloaded, but don't purchase any of them...

As a beginner you want entity 1.39 to do your own mods
you want SPPF to patch files to play other peoples mods
If you have a crappy graphics card like me (64MB) you want to use entity alpha because when viewing bsps (placing things on maps) it uses low graphics and moves much quicker
There are other programs that you may want to use everything you could need is in UMPv5 (SPPF, entity alpha and some old school programs are there too)
I recommend also getting netframework 2 from microsoft (its free) and keeping it with your modding programs and execute it every couple of days

all downloadable from H2 Utilities

I would suggest if your new to modding using the program dot_halo or ADI as you are far less likely to screw your map up as quickly, entity is fantastic once you get your head around the basics, but first get a good handle on using plugins and playing with dependencies and learning how the map works. Also it is a far less scary interface for newer modders, when i first opened entity it threw me right off lol ;)

I agree zenon the first time I saw entity I didn't understand at all but now thinking back having to learn all those other programs finding that they couldn't do everything and then having to learn entity I know what I would choose, any way theres loads of entity based tuts now do some projectile swaps add some teleporters add things like tanks to bevercreak the simple stuff that can be fun, that gives you a feel for the type of mods you want to make

yeah, just start out with Dothalo and the built-in PPF patcher it has, then once ur around those basics, start using Entity and SPPF patches, but also learn Serenity patches, as they have more to them than SPPF ;)
