Modding going to die with Halo 3 release?

Post by killarzachary »

Well I've herd talk about people like Scotty Gee planning on retiring from modding when Halo 3 comes out so, I was wondering how many people are planning on continuing because I am hoping that theirs still a lot of us out their.

If this is in the wrong place then please move it.

I'm mainly continuing because it gives me something to do while my sister plays Halo 3 (yeah she loves video games), and also because I love modding.

Halo 2 modding won't die till 1 maybe 2 years after Halo 3 modding has started.
Heh, there are even a few who still mod Halo 1 today!

Well... I just started modding within the last month, so it would be a shame if it died out. If I get good at modding, then I'll try to move on to Halo 3 eventually.

I think that once the "big modders" leave, Halo 2 modding will die out.
As for me I don't have a 360 so I have no reason to stop :P

It's death on it's way. This place has put so many rules on everything, there's almost nothing you can publically release once it's out.

Think aboput all the Halo1 modders there still at it even 4 years after Halo2's release so i doubt halo2 modding will die just a little decrease is all.But Halo2 will always be the best sequal to anygame ever besides Halo3 so ill probably still mod Halo2 im learning alot of things like programming and such so once im ready to roll wit the big dogs with the halo3 scene Anthony will have to help me out ;p.but before halo3 modding even starts we have to hope xboxscene or someone else chips the 360 or think of a way to soft mod it so even after halo3 is released its going to be a ruff start

Yeah most likley I will stop at halo 3. Mostly because my creativity after 17 mods is being a little stretched out. Time is closing and there's not too much new stuff I can go after...But who knows, I'll most likley stay around this site to see what happens with h2 and h3 modding, but probably won't be a modder like I am now (the lazy kind :P, the best kind ;))

But don't worry, whilst halo 2 modding has reached (IMO) its peak, it doesn't mean people won't mod at all...I doubt it'd die...Heck I'd make another mod for the sake of making it live longer than Halo 1 modding :P can't have those stuck up computer users outdoing us awesome xbox guys

I'll probably stop Halo 2 modding when halo 3 come out, but if we can inject custom sbsp's on halo 2 then i'll probably come back for some mods :)

And if we can mod halo 3 i'll be probably here :D

I think there will be at least a few things about the off-the-shelf H3 implementation that will be crappy in some way, and it will not be fun to accept them as they are, at least until the mod scene builds some momentum. The tremendous control over gameplay has spoiled me. Even when I first played H1 and H2 and had no idea modding was even possible without raw hex editing, I thought the running speed was ridiculously slow, and a lot of the stock weapons in H1 and H2 are complete crap. Being able to slightly (or radically) customize the game so that it fits my concept of good gameplay has greatly extended the life of the game for me and the people I play with. The ability to forcibly outlaw cheapness, balance weapons, make new weapons, and make new(!) maps really keeps the cobwebs off of H2 for me.

If they have craptified my beloved rocket launcher, or neutered the pistol, or if some other weapon is ridiculously easy to exploit, I'll content myself with playing the old hotness. So many excellent tools for H2 have been built by talented people by now, and relatively few frontiers remain uncharted. I think it'll be unpleasant to go back to modding kindergarten.

On the other hand, I love new maps, and Halo's multiplayer map design is generally very good (the map design for most campaign levels in H1 and H2, however, is GARBAGE). So I'm eager to play new maps and see how they've improved the game. The physics, FOV and "feel" of H2 took some getting used to, but now H1 feels strange and archaic, enough for me to play it only very seldom. If that is once again the case with H3 compared to H2, then eventually I will leave H2 behind.

But I think that day will be a long time coming. At least a year, maybe more. I do expect an exodus of modding talent to H3, but that will ultimately be for the better.

I don't see Halo 3 modding becoming as huge as Halo 1/2 were. Not in the sense that there won't be developers making tools, or that the system will be difficult to crack...but because we won't really be able to play them. Most people who buy a 360 do it to play on XBL and get the whole experience of the console what with the expanded features of XBL and such. It's not like an Xbox where you can go buy another one for $100 "cheap" or something.

Even in the case that you have multiple 360s/no Xbox Live, there's no (to my knowledge) way of playing games on the 360's hard drive, i.e. dvd2xbox. So basically you'd have to burn the game to a DVD every time you wanted to mod...and unless you have rewriteable DVDs, that just wouldn't be very practical. But where there's a will there's a way, and I'm sure we'll all figure out some way. And if not...well then I guess we oughta start saving up for another 360 and some DVDs.

Yeah, I agree 100% with what you said. I know I'm definitely not going to be modding Halo 3. Halo 2 is really easy and you don't need to many materials to do it with. I've gone through about 4 xboxes total (counting modding and ones that just shit out), and it's not really been a problem. Hopefully we'll still see some good Halo 3 mods (and Halo 2).

I honestly will not be visiting this site nearly as much when halo 3 comes out (at first anyways). I will be very preoccupied with halo 3.
