Thinking of Vista

Post by shadowkhas »

I'm thinking about buying Vista Home Premium. I just have a couple questions about it, though.
1) Is it really important that I do a reformat -> reinstall, considering I've had this computer for only four to five months, and I've never gotten any viruses or major problems on it?
2) If I don't need to reformat, then would a normal upgrade install keep all of my games' data and stuff? I don't want to run the risk of EA going bonkers because of BF2142's registration data getting lost.

A friend of mine recently upgraded his laptop and it retained all of his games and programs and such, but I can't be sure that it wouldn't mess up specific games.

I'm not very helpful. :|

Ryder, it would update through the internet, it doesn't really matter when he gets it.

Yeah, I'm thinking that it shouldn't, since most of that stuff is in the Registry (and I can make a backup just in case) and would probably be preserved.
I should buy it. :o

It'd be the same version on the disk no matter when I got it. ;)

upgrading won't lose your data, but when installing a new OS you don't really want to upgrade anyway, buy full version vista and do a clean install, Vista rocks btw, he's very fast, faster then my XP. :D

You may not lose all your files...But what of your registry? Its brand new, so its higly likley your games will freak out and say INSTALL ME AGAIN!

I would just suggest you burn or backup your files and if you need them install them again...Chances are a lot of the stuff youhave on the computer you don't even need or use...When you start anew, you have all the stuff you do want :P

Like I said though, I've only had this computer for a pretty short amount of time, and I regularly (every week) go through and delete everything I haven't used and aren't planning on using. My biggest concern is my files though...I'll probably just backup my registry and games that I'm worried will freak out.

My dad's power supply blew out and gave him the excuse to upgrade his entire PC and made it Vista ready. And to top of my Jealousy, Bought Ultimate with a Dev License which allows him to install on multiple computers. Only PCs Vista ready in my house is my Stepmom's box, (which was his old one, and also updated) and his.

lmfao, sorry for the spam Cuda...

I'd suggest Dual Booting for a while, on a clean install. Upgrades generally cause problems in the long run.

I reformatted and I'm doing just fine with Vista. I've played BF2142 a ton. There are a few bugs but Microsoft has been releasing updates nearly every week. Plus no OS is perfect they all have bugs. But I'd recommend it Shadowkhas if you are planning on Vista Gaming.

But if you do reformat, back up all your important data on a DVD disc or HDD.
