I know very little about hacking, but this seemed pretty wild. The idea that someone could have the power to damage so many computers all around the world at one time seems pretty darn big. Now, as mentioned above, mainly web sites were damaged, and it was only temporary, but could this be a sign of things to come? Or am I just paranoid.

The 2002 attack shutdown 8 of the 13 main DNS servers, if I remember correctly.

Most hackers who attempt major stuff (i.e. anything that makes the news) usually get arrested within the month and get either a serious fine or major jail time. Computers are very traceable, even with proxies and such.

The traceability of a computer working through a proxy depends on the anonymity of a proxy and how willing they are to cooperate with law enforcement/cyber crimes forces.

I've seen some sites making this out to be a huge deal. And unless I read wrong, it seems the targets were just large DNS servers. It's not like these servers are the only DNS servers and stuff; they're just some higher bandwidth ones. Since the internet is a computer to computer infrastructure, you can't just hax0r the interwebs.

i suppose if the web had any sort of centralized point of failure, it would be the higher bandwidth fiber optic lines, such as unersea ones, and main DNS servers, and organizations like the internic (not sure if they control the main DNS servers or not, can't remember). but seriously, the most effective way to globally affect the internet would probably be to take down the DNS servers by finding and exploit that would let you either damage the OS, BIOS, or destroy the HDD's contents (the ip-domain name list, for example)

but even then, i'm sure they have triple backups and everything, meaning even a successful attack would only bring down the internet a day.

Honestly, how old are you? I hate it when people who download "illegal" programs and shut down aim screens consider themselves hackers. Honestly, even if you were one of the greatest hackers in the world, no one would care. All you people do is cause fixable chaos. Nothing to be proud of, and most certainly gives you no bragging rights. Don't consider yourself "under the system" just because you can ping an ip and steal data. woopdi-effin-doo.
