Actually, if you read to later in the series, his hair turns black with silvery streaks in it. That render is pretty close.

What the hell is going on with the BG?

The MCs are... okay.. but everything else should be scrapped. Maybe this should have gone in 3dsmax help.

the background structure is a .dds taken straight from halo 2 and blurred on the edges.

Sorry, but it doesn't seem like you did a very good job at posing them based on the revolutionary war picture. Their roles seem to be completely opposite.. man in front in the render isn't doing anything, and the man in the back is doing quite a bit. In the real picture, the man in the back isn't doing anything at all, while the guy in front is doing most of the work.

you should fix the stuff above, and make the mcs seem like they are struggling with their head instead of not even looking at the flag

also perhaps switch all their positions so they are placing the flag on top of the rocks instead of them falling on a downward angle

The idea for that is excellent benman, but I think you should re-do it with H2 spartans and pay more attention to detail and the positioning. Good idea though, and not a bad execution.

Please tell me you don't actually think that statue is something based off he Revolutionary War.

That statue is a homage to the brave soldiers in Iwo Jima who raised the flag.
