HogWars::Trial

Post by Iron_Forge »

Well, it's been awhile since I've done anything major. Awhile back, I did some work on HPC:Trial maps, with what I enjoy most, finding the format, and the differences between the other map versions. This ended up being added to HMT by Monoxide, and I hoped that those out there who could not afford HPC would make some interesting mods with it for the rest in the same disadvantaged group.

I decided to take some spare time, and see what I could pull off using the Trial maps. I figured what better than to try and port my HogWars mod to Trial. Show the world the things which can be pulled off for free, and hopefully inspire others out there that HPC is truely a remarkable game, and if you don't own a copy, perhaps you should.

Considering the similarities between the HPC and HPC:Trial maps, I was really suprised at how difficult an undertaking this became. The Trial maps acctually seem to be alot more restrictive in "bastardizing" their format. Basically what this means is, while the Retail edition of HPC can overlook a mistake here and an omition there, Trial cannot. Corners cut in the original HogWars had to be fixed. While this proved to be a giant headache, it was also a nice change to have a new challenge that was more my area of expertice. I never have had much of an interest in the BSP or models which seem to have taken up everyones attention these days.

I remain a firm believer that from a technical point of view, new is better, but from a playable mod point of view, even the simplest can be enjoyable. I hope this serves as a reminder to everyone of yesterdays, don't be intimidated to mod just because you cannot do the latest SP->MP conversion. A well thought out mod with effort and time invested can be just as fun, even if it does just use a good Hex Editor, with alittle help from HMT of course. :o)

For those interested, the HogWars::Trial mod can be found here. Because the Trial Version does not allow for game types to be made (and seemed to frown upon me redefining the default vehicle set), I set it to use the three hogs which were added by ZexGX and myself in the original HogWars, leaving out the other two original Halo warthogs.

Woah thats awesome IF. Where have you been? Halo Mods wouldn't even be past projectile swapping without you.

You should stay and help out around here. Your smart and can answer alot of question people (including myself) have. I have lately taken up vehicle duplication as well and it is a very awesome task. I am making a new hog that looks alot like your civvie but you can sit in the back as well. I've also made a new banshee but i have not decided what to do with it. Ever since i have gotten into duplication you hogwars mod has been a huge help and inspiration to me. I ended up batch extracting hogwars to see how you did it.

But i have to say IF, you have revolutionized halo modding. Keep up the good work and i hope your trial version mod has some good success. I hope you had fun making it too. :D
