3ds Max Question

I was just wondering if you can make maps with a pirated one?
Someone told me that it only works with real versions.

I've tried to make a map and the ground always turns out invisible, but it has the right properties. So am I just doing something wrong or is it cause I have a pirated version?

I have 3ds Max 4.2.

I know this site doesn't support illegal stuff. I just wanna know if I'm able to or not. I would buy it if I had the money, and I will but it someday but right now my family's strapped for cash.
