You could try making a map out of scratch on photoshop, I would rather edit an existing one. It is a lot easier, and less time consuming. All you need yo do that is HMT and of course Halo.
Open HMT in order to extract the sepcific item you want to edit on photoshop. It could be in under any of the tags. Then click save texture, be careful to rename the file names to the type of file. This avoids confusion. Then save.
Open photshop and open as and click the item you have saved. You might have to play around with the file types to get what you want. Anyway as soon as you want to save it after you have edited it, save it again. However I do not know the type of files you need to save it as. Someone else could maybe help you.
You might need a convertor for the file formats if they do not appear in the drop down box.
After you have converted go to HMT, inject textures, then select the image you edited and inject. Then of course save.
