Removing Pillars in Midship - Black Spots on Ground

Post by Veditor »

Hey everyone,

I have successfully removed the pillars in Midship in the middle of the map but I have run into a problem. For some reason there are black spots right where the pillars used to be and they are overlaying the ground textures. Is there any way to remove these as they look terrible and I just want the black spots gone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, and if I throw a grenade the flash of the explosion will show the ground texture below the black spots. Thanks!

I don't know if it is though. There were 3 BSP sceneries for the pillars so I used the BSP Scenery Editor program to move them below the map (the front of the pillars, the back of the pillars were regular scenery). But other than that I don't know.

i removed them before too for a mod i was making and they were stuck there i couldnt get rid of them so i just gave up, but you could skin the level to match sort of also you could put something on top of it besides the pillars. does yours freeze?

I think Shade said that has something to do with the lightmaps, but I dunno. What I would do, is just place something over it like an obstacle or some other scenery. :P

So basically there is no possible way to remove these black spots? I'd really like the pillars to be removed for the mod that I'm making, without sacrificing the look of the ground. If indeed the spots cannot be removed does anyone have any suggestions as to what scenery, obstacle, etc. to place over the spots or the whole main floor of Midship in order to maintain the open feeling that I am going for? Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the responses so far!

What type of a map "feel" are you going for? Office building? Jungle? Inferno? 0.o?

i'd add water to the level and make a swimming pool level, like the "local community center pool". null out the platform and you would have 2 diving boards!!

I think the black spot is the color of the sky so if you change it to a sky color that you like or skin the sky bitmap to something to match your mod then you shouldn't have a problem.

I'm near positive it's a result fo the lightmap being compiled with the BSP scenery in place. Try nulling the lightmap out.

Thanks everyone! The spots in fact are part of the lightmap and when I nulled the lightmap out of the scnr it they went away. Now, is there a way to remove the spots from the lightmap, and if so how would I go about doing this. Hopefully this can be accomplished - removing them from the lightmap, and I'd be thankful for any help.

Without access to Bungie's tools, at the moment it is impossible. You'd need something capable of recompiling the lightmap. Which, unfortunately, we do not have. This leaves you with 3 options:
A. Have a less pretty map without a lightmap.
B. Use alternative methods such as other lights and lamps and real-time lighting to make up for it.
C. Put the lightmap back on and see if you can place a few objects over the spots without them turning black as well.

Model resizing does not fix collision so you'd have to fix that too.

Hey I just thought maybe if you hang the turf lights or establish some light source there it would remove the spot. Just a thought.
