Problems with FTP

I have read the tutorials on how to FTP, my desktop is extremely old and slow but it is the only computer i have that recognizes the xbox connection through the crossover cable. I tried to use my laptop but when i go to SHOW ALL NETWORKS it doesnt show a connection. Is it possible to FTP on a laptop? Could it be my firewall settings cause when i connect the crossover cable into the laptop the little LED light turns red and another one blinks yellow....should it turn green?
