Photoshop Help

I have a question about photoshop. In Quaglinomans Photoshop tutorial, it tells you to make a layer called flats for the warthog. When i saved this, it compressed the layers together, so now it is one layer. Is it possible to save without compressing the layers? If so, could anyone post any DDS files they have(for any weapon or vehicle) with the layers separated? Thanks.

Save as a standard photoshop file, dds must be one layer but standard isn't.
