Sorry about the delay in updates, I've been in a mad rush for the past 6 weeks finishing off an album I've been working on for 3 years. That's all done so now I can concentrate on finishing this up faster than ever. I've already installed the roof properly now, with new textures and bump maps:

It doesn't look too bright at the moment, but the final map will have better, more elaborate lighting. I hope to have the massive stained glass window, which takes up the back wall of the main room, done by next week. Should have more pics of that by then.

This is one of the few examples of a map that is really made with love, where the gameplay setup is only second to aesthetic design and structural complexity.
Four other examples of a map like this would be New Mombasa / NMC, SnaFuBAR's Advent, Wave of Lag's current project(s), and -Laser's- Goldeneye Facility... however, it seems very clear that this will eclipse all of those other maps... possibly in that order, too.
No offense to the rest of you guys, but c'mon, look at this! This would own all of Bungie's other maps put together and squared ten times over.
Just brilliant.

OK, here's my stupid damn idea: using the skybox for teleporters. The actual is sky is really small, so it gives the impression of looking into another plane and each teleporter will have a totally different view. It also rotates slightly as you look around the entrance, because it's so closed in. It's kinda freaky the first few times you go through it.

It gives off eerie smoke, has it's own pulsating dark red/orange dynamic light and the clouds move really, really fast. It looks very nice when you see it moving. I may add other stuff into it, I'll have to see how things look when I get all of the other teleporters in place.

The good news is that since the areas with the teleporters are all portalled off, the main church room has had an fps boost since it doesn't have to bother drawing the skybox. The bad news is that I'll have to forget about the breakable windows. I think people would prefer a smoother game instead of something minor that doesn't have any effect on gameplay anyway.

And no, I didn't nick the idea after playing the Prey demo. I thought about doing this a couple of months ago, though I may have unconsciously been inspired by the Prey preview movie I saw last year.

Yikes...what kinda church is this? That figure above the door doesn't look very heavenly  . Still really cool, and the sky teleporters idea sounds like it could be pretty good.

The bump maps make it look like the rocks were actually modeled in there...
I can't wait to see how bad it looks on my notebook! Seriously, though, it'll look all flat and dull...

Heh, the more I work on this, the less it looks like an actual church. Only the main room really resembles it in terms of architecture. The skull in the pic above is a direct lift and shrink from the castle entrance in Siege. It works nicely there and looks appropriate given the scene behind it, I think.

[off topic]BTW laser, are you still working on that map?[off topic/]

And those are by far the sexyest bump maps I have ever seen for halo. The only game where I have seen better bump maps is elder scrolls IV. (which I may remind only came out a few months ago) You have you talent dude, I can't wait for this map to be released! Also how big in the file size now?

Check my bumpmapping tutorial: http://www.earthenrecords.com/bumpmaptut/intro.html
Most people seem to just take the original texture and convert it straight into a height map. It usually turns out all right, but it limits your options and the amount of depth you can use. Using my method of layering takes longer and requires a bit more thought, but you get better results.
