Yeah, I really am not getting fancy just yet. The first "bump" (if that's what it was) I did was a solid white (the bumps are initially just a picture o f black, white, and shadeds of gray, I'm understanding). The second "bump" I did was to try some different shades. All I did was put a bunch of circles, each with a white to black gradient eminating from the center. The result wasn't quite how I hoped it would be. The final one I did becuase I came across this skull with plenty of black, white, and shades of gray. I had hoped to see a difference. The problem, however, is partially because I'm using the sniper tower shader for the ghost shell, not the ghost shader. I think I picked a shader that has minimal bump capabilities. I had hoped on editing the original Ghost shader bump earlier, but I had family over most of the day. I'll try it as soon as I can.

As for my methods: I use Darkmatter to extract the Jpeg (yes, it's a jpeg) image that contains the bump information. I edit that in photoshop, and save it as a DXT 1 which I end up making the original bump use.

I think bottom line is that I have to find someting that looks like a difference in actual texture. I don't think the ghost is the best subject to start out on...

Thaks a ton for your guys' help with this. It is still experimental, and I hope to get it right. I like the effects I've had so far, but it's not quite what I"m looking for. (oh, even though I'm not into the whole goth/emo type thing, and skulls don't interest me, that skull ghost is actually way cool ingame. It's a pity the pics don't capture it well...

EDIT: I decided to get away from the ghost and move on to something else. I did the tile surface by the overshield on Headlong. I used a Custom, home made texture and with that I created a custom home made bumpmat (though it needs more intermittant heights in it). I used the Plasma Pistol so you could see the bumps with the light that it gives off. The bump fits perfectly with my skin I put on it (it's a VERY rough-draft copy: I'm still learning the best way to fine-tune my bumps. Even though, the joints between "bricks" on my skin appear as if they truly were deeper than the "bricks." ( I hope I'm making sense: it's almost 1:00 am and I'm trying to think.)

Here's the pics:

Yes, it's not perfect yet. If I were to spend more time on i t, I'd make sure it looked a lot more like the texture below. All I did for this one was make my brick texture grayscale, enhance the contrast, brighten it, and invert the colors. The thing that looks the most corrupt to me is the areas in the bright light (ie the bridge). I have the bump reading so "low" that it's totally black in the "deep" areas. I'll need to shallow it up a bit...

But that's just what I found to be most corrupt. What were you referring to?

Also, is this or is this not bumpmapping? I don't want to be making claims that are false.

I don't know about corrupt, but to me they just look really rusty looking. They don't seem to have any depth. The second to last picture seems to show it the most... it kind of looks like there's just a second layer to the texture that doesn't go well with the first at all. I'm avoiding special terminology, because quite frankly I don't know.

Ah crap, my first "theycallmechad VS ScottyGEE" bump contest, and I loose!

Okay, that out of the way how about you say what you like/dislike about both my and ScottyGEE's bumping attempts? We're really trying to get this thing done right as it'll greatly enhance any skin. I think ScottyGEEs MC looks better than his cliffs, but it's hard to tell with pictures. Also, what is it about my ground texture that looks horrible? I made that bump in literally 5 min, and did it because people believed this method did nothing but tweak the shader a bit.

Anyway, Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

Ok, I've done some more tests.
It seems that black parts of bumpmaps are the sticking out parts whereas white is the indentation of a bumpmap.

I find that these pics speak for themselves...and if they dont...then sorry.

so basically, If I wanted miniscule indented bumpmaps it make it mostly of the same colour and nicley blended white coloured. I could make the same kind of thing with black but it would be the furthest sticking out.

Now if I wanted something really nocticable id put black and white next to eachother (kinda like my "s" only that was grey and white, no black so image the contrast of white and black)

Yeah, it doesn't look sexy on the surface, but being able to tell a surface exactly how to respond when hit by lighting at different intensities and at different angles can be a great tool for skinning. Good work, the ScottyGEE!
