i am a noob at this...i just downloaded 3ds 8 and i would apprecite someone either replying or pm'ing or im'ing me at 'ohsnapson91'. i just have a few questions...i will give u something in return for helping me. i would appreciate anything.
well, first you need to open your material editor (press the "M" key on your keyboard) and click the square beside Diffuse in the first material's properties. Then select bitmap from the next list, and the masterchief texture from the window.
OK, I'm a little confused about bump maps. On the master chief when you use the grey scale bumps all of the details are just outlined but when you use the camo bump the bumps look right, just like in the game. But on models like the Elite, the camo bump is extremely low res so you can't use it, and on models like the ODST, there is no camo bump so you have to use the grey scale, but when you use the grey scale all of the details are just outlined and it is not like that in the game. Is there some other bump map that the game uses? Or is it just something that I'm missing...
Snave, how would you edit that so you could apply the normal map filter on it and it would actually look acurate? The slope thing is what really throws me off.
There is no reason for you to make it into a normal map, you'd get the same effect as if you applied a standard bump map.

It's not whether or not it's a normal map or not, it's about it being accurate or not. So far the only models I have seen with accurate bump maps are the arbiter and the chief and that is their camo bump. What does the game event use the grey scale map for? There has to be another bump for the models somewhere, maybe Ch2r can't see them? Or some way that the game converts the bumps, because the bump map you can extract with Ch2s is definitely not the same as the in game one.
It is converted into a normal map from the game's algorithm and run through THEIR rendering engine. Not Max's. Their rendering engine handles normal maps MUCH differently, and cannot be exactly re-created in 3ds Max.

Uh no
Unless you have the source-code to Halo 2's rendering engine and could convert it to a rendering plugin for 3ds Max, then yes.
