Torlan: An HEK-Ready Project (Sign up Here)

Post by [VC]CaptainValor »

Well I'm sure a lot of you by now have played the *fantastic* Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo. And you, as I am, are probably very intrigued by the new "Onslaught" game type. Well I'm not so much a fan of the game type as I am of the map that it's played on: "ONS-Torlan". This is a very, very big outdoor map with a relatively simple yet very engaging design (BG on crack). It would, in my opinion, by a no-brainer for conversion to Halo once the HEK is released.

As you can imagine, this would be a project way too big for one person. So I'm currently taking applicants for this mod if you're interested and can spare the time. We will need:

-Skinners (although the map already has skins, we may need someone to position them using Sapien)
-Mappers (for the same reason; we will have a level structure but need to figure out MP object placement such as vehicles, flags, spawns, etc.)
-(possibly) Experienced UT2003 Modders. (I have a tool for extracting the components of a UT2k3 or (maybe) UT2k4 map, but I would still appreciate some expert help)

Please contact me via AIM if you are interested. I'm usually on in the afternoons, evenings, and early morning. Help me make this a reality! 8)

I will have to see how easy/difficult Sapien is to use before I join any of theses HEK teams....

BTW, Torlan isnt BG on crack. Its BG on steroids and markers.

lol, Good point there.

Anyways, it seems the project has been front-paged over at Cortana.org, which is unexpected to say the least. As for doubts about the HEK's capabilities; we can still do all the preparation and then adapt to how the HEK works. Are you game, Tsukasa?

Bad news, people (possibly). I just realized this project might be over before it's even begun. The tool I just got that claims to do UT2k4 map extracting actually can't. This means we cannot extract the textures or map file need for this mod to work...at the moment. Currently I'm putting the project on hold BUT still taking applications because I'm confident that the tool will be revised soon.

Thanks for your patience. :)

Actually, I just heard that UT2k4 will come with a full editing suite that should definitely be able to export everything we need. And it looks like it will be coming out at about the same time as the HEK. :)

i am an avid 2003 mapper. you can export ut textures as they are also dds files. as for meshes not part of the terrain you can convert them to a brush save the brush as a file that i know milkshape can read. as for the terraim i ma not sure what unrealed(new) can do about exporting that.

Sounds like you know what you're doing. We could definitely use your skills on the team.

EVERYONE INTERESTED IN JOINING PLEASE GO HERE. I've moved the signup to the project's temporary home thread. :)

Like some people at those threads say, it would be sooo much more kickass if you got Bomb Run or Assualt (mmm....good times...) as game modes. And imagine if you made a map to look like a football field....whoa...

a football field is probebly alot easier than making torlan. as for the gametype i dont know if that will happen as the HEK isnt out yet.

From what i gather....they are going to use the new version of UnrealED (and if it supports it), copy the map as a brush, save it as some format milkshape can use, and put it in as a .OBJ or whatever the HEK specifies.

But we're not trying to "make" a map now are we?

And the gametypes thing is still way out there. We have to see what the HEK is capable of before we decide whether or not that's possible. What IS possible is map and texture importing. And that's really all we need to do the conversion.

As for the football field...

Let's just say that's not a "high" priority. lol
