how do you make a skin or texture for a model you made from scratch?

actually how would you edit the ones that are already existing with 3ds max? and yes i am a noob modeller.

i couldnt find it in maya, i dont use it much sorry, but for max u have to use uvws, uvw unrap is the easiest way and make a map out of that

I think you do something with each quarter of the model. like move it or something.

I dunno because I've never tried it.
