Why do I always have bad things to say? Because the target material I'm addressing ISN'T good. Am I supposed to post blindly and obliviously and lead these kids into false expectations so they will continue producing below mediocre quality products with the mind set that they're producing godly content? Sorry, but I don't know a single person who has standards so low that they look at extruded splines as some godly creation. Also, he just posted the model, nothing else, he didn't ask for C&C or anything, so by me saying I don't like it and not giving further critique, I'm STILL going above and beyond his expectations. So I'm sorry General Church for going above other people's expectations. I'll try to lower my standards to yours next time.

I was doing a direct quotation from you, so the punctuation wasn't great, good job on insulting Infidelchimp. And also, FYI is an "official" abbreviation that is recorded in dictionaries everywhere, and is even used in official and cooperate newsletters. ppl, is not.

I started a complaints thread about Veegie, if you want to say something. Might as well be in here. There's no need to spam in here anymore than we have to.

Woah, everyone is always at each others throats in this place. I would have to say that people should accept criticism on whatever they post if it is of such a poor standard as this model. You dont have to post your models on the forum, and if you post a really bad one, then you shouldn't be offended if someone tells you its a really bad model. My advice would be to toss that model in the garbage and model it, as chimp said, in sections. Use edit poly, its a really powerful tool, theres plenty of tuts on it, and it welds together easily and uvw unwraps smoothly too as long as you keep your polygons as quads (4 sides). Smoothing is also a lot better this way, and you can just toss a meshsmooth on the top of your modifier stack and toggle on/off end result and continue to model in low poly, while having the smoothed result available at all times. Just google edit poly and youll be on your way.

We ought to all realise though that none of us here are really experts at this and we are all still learning, even Veegie. I'm doing a university course in interactive media, and i know damn well that learning by yourself can be a lot faster and easier than doing a course in it, so go easy...

As a community we should try to be encouraging, even to those just starting out, because we all sucked at one point!

I'm not yet convinced about NURBS, but chimp seems to like them a lot. I reckon poly is better for a gun model though just given the more boxy nature of the object. I'd use splines/poly for a character, but each to his own! Its more a matter of what you're comfortable with, you can get the same results with most methods. Zbrush is actually something that looks really good for adding detail to models. There was a demo of it with this months 3d world....

take all the smoothing groups off and apply then again. dont apply the same group to something thats greater than a 90 degree angle. and chamfer the edges.
do that and itl look better
