Connecting to xbox from modem or my PC tower :S

i was wondering if its possible to connect to my xbox useing my cable modem or my tower is there any way to do it without using a router,hub, etc... ??

Quickest way would be another netword card.

but is there any way to use a modem and a crossover cable to connect to my xbox, everytime a try to connect i get "Cannot Find route to Host"
and i put my xboxes ip to the one its menchend to in the tutorials and i do the network places thing to :S
