Weapons effects

A lot of the mods have new effects for the weapons, how is this done? Do they edit the bitmap, make new ones? Is it hard? :?:

Well u have your base effects wich are impacts those are only for like lets say when u shoot at trhe ground and flesh and walls and other objects then u hgave your xplosions wich mind u are the best and sometimes easiest to change also explosions have the most prt3 and pmovs and such so u get alot of choices. Then u have your firing effects of each weapon those are only for when u fire your weap they include muzzle flash and suchj and the firing sound effects another great effct to start with when making your own. Thats about it the most i use are the Explosions and Firing effects cuz those seem to be ones that make moddign them worth while

A lot of times, when I change something, I can't tell the difference. When I change it, do I need to keep it in the same category.
EX:
\effects\impact\large_explosion\

Would I need to keep it in the large_explosions, or could I fall back into anything in impact or just any effects at all?
