this is my very first model - excluding the funny box shapes.
It is the model of a M249-SAW Heavy Machine gun, and is about 1100 polys if i remember correctly.

ya. me 2. Its pretty good 4 ur first model, but u know that u have to get the polys down to about 500. However, nice!
I tried hard and i failed miserably. The lesson is: never try?

Not bad. But the "smooth" button is there for a reason

Yeah. I've seen far worse first models, I'd say my first was a little worse than this. Good job, clearly you're well on your way to modelling awesome guns...

The smooth button always screws up the models.

No, it doesnt. You probably apply smooth to the whole thing, am I right? Or you crank the smoothing level right up?
Smoothing works fine as long as you don't OVERSMOOTH. And some parts of the model may not always need smoothing, so you can leave those.
