thanks, i'll reduce the number of stars but they're applied randomly and i can't just remove them from around the sun. I'll reduce the reflections too.

i was concerned about any close-up shots with the inamberclad because of the bump map being low resolution (though i have resized it and sharpened it), so i added another detail bump as well. this was just a test render. nothing is in it accept the chief, the elite, and the ship.

nice,
definentally improves the closeups.
One thing though, I noticed that on the elite's fingers you can see the seams on the bottom sides.
now since they'll be fist fighting this will be noticed pretty easily.
If he was holding a weapon it would be another story..
BTW...
How the hell do i Import the level scenery?

ohhh... that's quite a bit more complicated. map geometry is known as a BSP. BSP extraction from halo 2 just went public about 10 days ago with the release of the Dark Matter alpha. Unfortunately, the alpha gives errors when you try to open the files in 3dsmax. When the final of Dark Matter comes out, we will be able to do that.

wow, long time since i've been here. anyway, here's a minor update. all i've really done is change which bump map i'm using (thanks jean-luc) and use a different star map. Oh, and the earth is higher res. too now.

rossgemuend is a noob
You guys have no idea how big of a n00b rossgemuend is. There is a leaked vid on the net of one of his renders. The MC's hand is flying around all crazy during it. It didn't even touch anything! What a n00b! I don't care if it was the first 2 seconds that he touched 3DS Max, that's horrible. I could have done a better job in my mother's womb! Look how long it's been since he updated, he probably can't figure out how to use his mouse! AHAHAHAHAHA!
EDIT: Just kidding you guys. I go to school with Ross and he's like 2 feet from me when we're at school. We're on work term for 3 months, so I haven't seen him in a couple weeks. He told me he was getting back to working on his vid, so I found this thread and "cut him down". The kid's pretty smart. He's never even used 3DS before this. I can tell you he put a lot of time into reading tutorials and searching the net for every little detail he could find. He basically taught himself, rarely asking for help. He puts a shitload of time into this, because he has to do every animation by hand. Nothing is automated at all. It's painstaking work, but he has a lot of dedication. I think he said about an hour of work equals 2 seconds on the vid. It's crazy! Just to let everybody know, I am friends with Ross and this was just a joke. I only wish I knew as much as the kid does. Hope you find this amusing Ross. We'll all be waiting for the final vid!
The part I said about the flying hand was true though, he showed me it. He eventually got it figured out though. Ross, put it up on your server and throw a link in here, it's hilarious as hell.

lol, thanks chad (textbook). I'll send you some vids of the updated stuff i've been working on. sry i couldn't make that lan party last week. work is awesome but it sux when you want to do something else. anyway, for anyone else who is paying attention to this thread, what do you think of the new sun? There is also some specular bloom effects that I made by blurring the illuminance map slightly.
sun test
the sun is now the "actual" light source of the entire scene. The same shadowing that is applied to the tiniest detail is the same that is applied to a huge ship. Before when I tried doing something similar to this, the small details (like shadowing of mc or elites) was extremely poor quality bacause it was set to do a much larger scene. Now, it's uniform throughout.
ship
1600x1200 1
1600x1200 2
next, the moon
